Rule Editor

Creating a rule starts with the type picker — seven types, each with a one-line description:

  • Wildcard — "One folder per distinct value in a column."

  • Games — "One folder per game, with optional All Games playlist."

  • Down & Distance — "Group plays into named down/distance buckets."

  • Field Position — "Group plays by yard-line ranges."

  • Filter — "Create a single playlist using a custom filter expression."

  • Advanced Filter — "Stack multiple named filters — one playlist per filter."

  • Ad-Hoc — "Hand-curated folders/playlists you fill with plays from the grid."

Then the editor opens on a tab strip: Rule Settings / Title Slide / Stats / Charts — plus AI Analysis, shown with the AI license. This chapter is the Rule Settings tab; the others dress the rule's playlists up.

Commit with Add Folder Rule (new) or Update Folder Rule (editing); the  ◀ Types button backs out to the picker while creating.

Two pickers appear on most types:

  • Sort Rule — every type except Ad-Hoc (Ad-Hoc sets it per playlist). ("none)" by default; the  button beside it manages the sort-rule catalog in place.

  • Custom Filter (optional) — on the three bucketing types (Wildcard, Down & Distance, Field Position): narrow the rule to plays matching one of your saved Filter rules before bucketing — say, Wildcard on Formation, but only third-down plays. " (none)" means all plays;  opens the Filter Rules manager.

Wildcard

The workhorse. Pick a Column and you get one folder per distinct value in it — Formation gives a folder per formation, Personnel a folder per grouping, with every matching play inside.

  • Sort Order controls the folder order: Ascending, Descending, Most Frequent, or Least Frequent. Most Frequent floats the opponent's biggest tendency to the top.

    - Prefix (optional) — text like "01 -" prepended to each folder name.

Games

One folder per game — the simple "watch it by week" breakdown. The single option, Include 'All Games' playlist, adds one playlist holding everything: None, First (before per-game folders), or Last (after per-game folders).

Down & Distance

The classic situational breakdown. Pick the Down Column and Distance Column (and optionally a Series Column — with one chosen, each range also takes Series Min/Max bounds by series number).

Then build named Ranges — each one a bucket in the tree:

  • A Label ("3rd & 3-6"), the down checkboxes (1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th), and Dist. Min / Dist. Max — leave a bound blank ("any") for no limit.

  • + Add Range appends another;  removes one.

Generate Defaults seeds the classic set in one click — 1st Down; 2nd & Long 7+; 2nd & 3-6; 2nd & 1-2; 3rd & 7+; 3rd & 3-6; 3rd & 1-2; 4th & 3+; 4th &1-2 — then you tweak from there. If ranges already exist it asks first ("Replace existing ranges with defaults?" —Replace or Cancel).

Field Position

Where on the field. Pick the Yard Line Column, then build named ranges
with Min Yard / Max Yard bounds — negative numbers mean your own side
of the field.

Generate Defaults seeds the standard zones: Coming Out / Open Field /
Plus Territory / Score Zone / Red Zone / Goal Line — and asks before
replacing ranges you've already built.

Filter

One playlist from one question. The Filter Name is the playlist name; the Folder Name auto-follows it as you type, until you give the folder its own  name.

The filter itself uses the standard builder — point-and-click or typed  expression (ch. 7). "3rd down passes", "explosive runs", "everything out of  Trips" — if you can describe it, it's a playlist.

One checkbox deserves its own highlight — "What's next — show the play following each match". Instead of the matching plays, the playlist holds each match's successor: the play that came next in the game. Great for "what do they run after a big play?" or "what's the call after a timeout?"

Advanced Filter

A whole family of questions under one roof: one folder (the Rule Name) holding a stack of named filters — one playlist per filter, in stack order. As the editor puts it: "One playlist per filter, in this order. A play matching several filters appears in each."

  • + Add Filter opens the entry editor: Filter Name (becomes the playlist name)**, the entry's own What's next checkbox (per playlist, unlike the Filter rule's single toggle), and the standard filter builder. Done commits; Cancel discards — even a brand-new entry.

  • Drag entries to reorder the playlists; each row shows its expression at a glance ("What's next · …" flags successor playlists).

  • ✕ asks first: "Delete "{name}" from the stack? Its playlist will no longer be generated."

AdHoc

The hand-curated corner of the tree. Here you build only the skeleton — which folders and playlists exist; the plays come later, picked by hand from the grid.

  • The root Folder name is the rule's folder in the tree.

  • + Folder / + Playlist add children at any level — folders nest as deep as you like. Rename any node inline.

  • Each playlist gets its own sort-rule picker ("(no sort rule)") — the one rule type where sorting is set per playlist instead of on the rule.

  • ✕ removes a node (and a folder's children with it).

The playlists start empty by design. Generate, then stock them from the grid with right-click → "Add N plays to:"
